HIMA 3000 Intro to Health Care Systems
Prerequisite: Must have completed at least 30 semester hours of college-level work and admission to either the Health Information Management program or the Health Services program.

A study of the U.S. healthcare system emphasizing the critical issues faced and the multidisciplinary nature of those issues. An introduction to Health Information Informatics Management and the role of the professional in healthcare delivery is also explored.

Provides an in-depth look at strategic management in the health care setting, including leadership in the e-health environment, productivity monitoring, change management, and process redisign. Focuses on human resources management, training, communication, and ergonomics.

The course provides and in-depth look at healthcare data sets including the uniform ambulatory care data set, uniform hospital discharge data set, and health care standards. Explores paper-based, hybrid, and electronic health records as well as secondary data sources and maintenance standards.
HIMA 3410 Health Data Class I

A study of healthcare taxonomies and nomenclature with a focus on ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM. The appropriate assignment of diagnosis codes, procedure codes, morphology codes, and ICD-O oncology codes. This course provides the student an introduction to Medical Coding & Classification of diseases, injuries, encounters, and procedures using standard applications of Medical Coding Guidelines to support reimbursement of healthcare services.

The study of Current Procedual Terminology and the assignment of HCPCS level I and level II codes to medical procedures and services.

Explores the application of coded data and health information in the reimbursement process. Reimburseent management, federal regulations, and optimization issues will be addressed.
HIMA 4190 HIM Internship/Seminar

This course will allow students to perform advanced functions of a health information management (HIM) department. Students will work in realistic work environments in either a traditional, non-traditional, or lab setting. Activities will include application of all HIMA coursework. The student will also learn professional skills to prepare them for employment in the HIM career field.
