HICB 2120 Fundamentals of Coding
Admissions to BSHS Program required
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of medical coding, including the application of the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) and the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding systems. Students will develop the foundational skills needed to accurately assign diagnostic and procedural codes from healthcare documentation, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and standards. Emphasis is placed on understanding coding conventions, sequencing rules, medical terminology, anatomy, and pathophysiology as they relate to coding practice.
HICB 2130 Fundamentals of Coding II
Prerequisite: Admission to BSHS program; HIMA 2000, BIOL 2252K, HICB 2100, HICB 2120
Credit Hours: (3-0-3)
This course introduces students to the principles and applications of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding as developed by the American Medical Association. Students will gain knowledge and skills in accurately coding medical procedures and services for outpatient, physician office, and ambulatory settings. The course emphasizes correct code assignment, compliance with official guidelines, and the relationship between CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM coding systems in the revenue cycle. Real-world scenarios and case studies will prepare students to apply CPT coding in professional practice while ensuring accuracy, integrity, and ethical standards in health information management.
HICB 2140 Fundamentals - Advanced Coding
Prerequisite: Admission to BSHS program; HIMA 2000, BIOL 2252K, HICB 2100, HICB 2120, HICB 2130
Credit Hours: (3-0-3)
This advanced course builds on foundational coding knowledge from Fundamentals of Coding I and II. Through clinical coding case studies and advanced coding scenarios, the students will enhance their coding knowledge. Students will also explore healthcare billing processes, payment systems, and the importance of ethical coding practices in ensuring compliance, data integrity, and quality outcomes.
